Don’t let it be forgot that once there was a spot for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot.”
Cotuit Center for the Arts is pleased to announce our Gallery exhibit, AMERICAN CAMELOT, designed to complement our terrific production of the classic musical Camelot. The exhibit features rare photographs from the JFK Library and Museum in Boston and works on loan from the JFK Hyannis Museum Foundation, as well as contributions from local Cape Cod artists that reflect the Kennedys’ very personal connection to Cape Cod. Contributors include David Lewis, the artist and sculptor who designed the statue of JFK that appears in front of the museum on Hyannis, who will trace the project from start to finish through personal correspondence with the Kennedy family. A limited edition of one of Ted Kennedy’s paintings of his beloved Mya will also be displayed, along with many pieces by local artists that demonstrate what a deep human connection the Kennedy dynasty had on people of all walks of life, and how they longed for what might have been.
Wander through our gallery and enjoy an exhibit inspired by a period of hope and optimism. Whether it was the time of the Knights of the Round Table or the John F. Kennedy years, Camelot’s theme of a lost, great society certainly strikes a chord in all of us. For an earlier view of this poignant exhibit, please consider joining us for our gala benefit, Entertainment Tonight, on July 31st from 6:30pm to 10:30pm. We will officially unveil the exhibit during this event and offer a sneak preview of Camelot along with great food, wine, art, dance and entertainment. Tickets for Camelot and Entertainment Tonight are available on our website, www.artsonthecape.com.

“Don’t let it be forgot that once there was a spot for one brief shining moment that was known as Camelot.” Some of the enchanting musical numbers include “The Simple Joys of Maidenhood,” “The Lusty Month of May,” “How to Handle a Woman,” “I Loved You Once in Silence,” “If Ever I Would Leave You,” “What Do The Simple Folk Do?” and, of course, “Camelot.” In the end, this delightful story comes full circle. CCftA announces the Cape Cod premiere of “See What I’m Saying: The Deaf Entertainers Documentary”, a film by Hilari Scarl for one night only on September 22nd. “See What I’m Saying” offers a powerful and unique look at a rarely understood culture. Focused on four gifted deaf entertainers, the film touches on more than the talents of these unsung heroes – it hits extremely relatable chords for audiences worldwide – that all of us want to feel included, accepted and share our personal gifts and humanity with our larger community. Though we each have different struggles and situations, our feelings, goals and desire remain the same. See What I’m Saying’s universal appeal transcends the four richly intertwined stories, and offers a unique peek inside deaf culture, giving audiences an opportunity to view this vibrant community in a fascinating new light. In additional to the screening a series of 3 hours of workshops will be offered for $30. Workshop and screening details will be announced shortly. For more information on the film and the incredible press, please visit www.seewhatimsayingmovie.com.

The classic Ibsen Play re-imagined by Tristan DiVincenzo
Cotuit Center for the Arts is pleased to announce The Ghosts Project, at the Botello House; CCftA’s latest offering from their ever expanding performance and exhibition complex.
CCftA pairs one of the most important playwrights of the 19th century, Henrik Ibsen and visionary director Tristan Di Vincenzo of the Munchausen Group Projects Los Angeles, for a production of the metaphysical love story Ghosts. This fresh and innovative theater event features an interactive set for actors and 25 guests per night with the scenes played in and around the historic Botello House property. It is experiential theater, creating an intimate viewing in a unique space as the guests become part of the set background.
Ghosts is set in the country home of the wealthy widow, Helen Alving. Her son Oswald has just returned from living in Paris. Tomorrow they, along with family friend Pastor Manders and the entire town of Cotuit, will dedicate the orphanage Alving has erected as a memorial to her husband, Captain Alving, a man much respected by their small community. In confidence, she reveals to her spiritual advisor, Pastor Manders, that she has built the orphanage not only to mask the evils of her marriage, but to deplete her philandering husband’s wealth, so that their son might not inherit anything from him. During the action of the play she discovers that Oswald is suffering from syphilis, and worse has fallen in love with her maid Regina.
The play draws to a dramatic conclusion, as it is revealed that Regina is the illegitimate daughter of Captain Alving, and thereby Oswald’s own half-sister. Broken hearted, Mrs. Alving now faces the choice, whether or not to euthanize her son Oswald in accordance with his last wish.

About the instructors:
DAVID SIGEL grew up in Worcester, MA and spent many of his childhood summers on Cape Cod. After receiving his B.F.A in painting from Boston University, Sigel found himself with two passions, one as a painter and the other as an art teacher. He has been teaching for over fifteen years; at Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine, The Fessenden School in West Newton, Massachusetts, and currently, he serves as the chair of the Visual Art Department at The Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Sigel and his wife, sculptor and educator, Hilary Hutchison, come back to the Cape each summer to spend time in Cotuit where David can often be seen out with his field easel capturing the landscape.
HILARY HUTCHISON grew up in Southern New Jersey. Her professional experience has included membership with the Kingston Gallery in Boston, commissioned works for Tufts University and the The Fessenden School, and various solo and group exhibitions. She received her B.F.A and M.F.A degrees in sculpture from Boston University. Hutchison currently resides outside of Philadelphia where she continues to maintain a studio and teach 3-D Design and Sculpture at the Episcopal Academy. She is the co-founder of the Summer Art program, along with her husband, educator and painter, David Sigel. Hutchison’s work can be seen on her website: www.hilaryhutchison.com.
This perennial favorite is based on the haunting folktale of “Barbara Allen.” Employing a large cast and imaginative setting in the Smoky Mountains, it recounts the story of John, a strange “witch boy,” who upon first beholding the beautiful Barbara Allen immediately falls in love. He is given a human form to woo and marry her on the condition that she remain true to him. The marriage is consummated and Barbara gives birth to a witch child whom the townspeople destroy in a superstitious frenzy. During a religious revival, Barbara is led to betray John, thus breaking their spell of love. As she dies, he returns forever to the world of Mountain Witches.
