About the instructors:

DAVID SIGEL grew up in Worcester, MA and spent many of his childhood summers on Cape Cod. After receiving his B.F.A in painting from Boston University, Sigel found himself with two passions, one as a painter and the other as an art teacher. He has been teaching for over fifteen years; at Gould Academy in Bethel, Maine, The Fessenden School in West Newton, Massachusetts, and currently, he serves as the chair of the Visual Art Department at The Episcopal Academy in Newtown Square, Pennsylvania. Sigel and his wife, sculptor and educator, Hilary Hutchison, come back to the Cape each summer to spend time in Cotuit where David can often be seen out with his field easel capturing the landscape.

HILARY HUTCHISON grew up in Southern New Jersey. Her professional experience has included membership with the Kingston Gallery in Boston, commissioned works for Tufts University and the The Fessenden School, and various solo and group exhibitions. She received her B.F.A and M.F.A degrees in sculpture from Boston University. Hutchison currently resides outside of Philadelphia where she continues to maintain a studio and teach 3-D Design and Sculpture at the Episcopal Academy. She is the co-founder of the Summer Art program, along with her husband, educator and painter, David Sigel. Hutchison’s work can be seen on her website: www.hilaryhutchison.com.

Classes in the Visual Arts

Posted by Cotuit Arts On January - 25 - 2010

Classes in the visual arts, the majority of which are offered on an ongoing basis, are at the core of CCftA’s commitment to education. CCftA offers arts instruction in watercolor, acrylics, life drawing, stained glass, photography, oils, still life, and many other disciplines. Our artist students are accepted at all levels of experience and all ages.
Every year CCftA offers intensive week long workshops to hundreds of children and teens which offer up and coming talent an array of techniques, concepts and experiences in the visual and performing arts. This year CCftA will provide a grant driven intensive workshop which combines visual art with creative writing for gifted teens in the Gateway Program.
“Cotuit Center for the Arts has provided an invaluable art education experience for the artists at LIFE (Living Independently Forever Inc.). The center’s teachers are truly empathic and they have enabled each artist to express his/her personal artistic vision.”
-Barbara Oliver, Art Director, LIFE, Inc.
One of the most important programs we provide is on-going classes to mentally, emotionally, and physically challenged adults. In 2007 CCftA’s surprisingly successful painting classes with challenged adults from LIFE Inc. resulted in an exciting gallery exhibition. Students evolved into artists as their works were matted and framed for the very first time and hung in a formal gallery. It is an essential part of our mission to encourage individual artistic expression, and make the arts accessible to all members of our community.
